In an effort to educate and prepare caregivers on financial resources available to them, Alzheimer’s Services created the Financial Literacy workshops to address this area of the journey. It is essential for caregivers and those affected to educate themselves on services that are available to help them financially mange the treatment of Alzheimer’s. This program helps increase the knowledge and skills of caregivers in making appropriate financial life decisions for themselves as well as their loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s or dementia.

One in five children in our service area goes hungry every day. Scientific evidence points to a link between nutritional intake and cognitive development in children. The BackPack Program helps mitigate the negative impact that inadequate nutrition has on the health and well-being of children by providing nutritious, child-friendly food items in a discreet backpack on the weekends and holidays, and as well when they are not able to access the school lunch. Goals and objectives include increased attendance in school, improved behavior, improved health, and improved overall child happiness and well-being.

St. Mary’s Residential Training School
Alexandria, Louisiana / $8,000
Many of the residents at St. Mary’s exhibit problem behavior such as physical aggression, self-injury, pica, and elopement. The treatment program for individuals with development disabilities will house up to eleven persons and provide for a more secure living environment. The overall outcome will be measured by the observed decrease in problem behaviors. The expected changes are decreased problem behaviors and the acquisition of new socially appropriate replacement behaviors and skills.

Children living in poverty with uninvolved parents and unsupervised free time are at risk of unplanned pregnancies, drug and alcohol abuse, dropping out of high school, and involvement in the juvenile justice system. The goal of the Community in Schools Program is to help children succeed academically by removing barriers to receiving a quality education. Objectives include: students successfully promoting to the next grade level or graduation on time; improving attendance of students; and providing both school-wide and individual intensive services to students.
