New Mexico Cancer Center
Foundation |
Albuquerque, New Mexico/$5,000 |
|
The New Mexico Cancer Center
Foundation is a 502 c3
established in 2003.
The Foundation was established
because the physicians of the
NMCC observed that the financial
stress of the disease was just
as hard on the patient and the
family as the disease and
treatment. It is dedicated to
supporting our patients’
non-medical needs during their
battle with cancer. The goals
are to provide improved quality
of life, reduction in stress and
hope for the patient and their
family. This is an innovative
program that provides 3rd party
payment of necessities such as
utilities, car payments, rent,
gas and groceries. |

NM Center on Law and
Poverty |
Albuquerque, New Mexico/$10,000 |
|
Hunger and malnutrition threaten
the health of New Mexico’s
families, interfere with
children’s proper development
and learning in school, and make
it much more difficult to escape
from poverty. The single best
tool for staving of hunger and
malnutrition is the Food Stamp
program, now called the
Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program (SNAP). The
Center intends to ensure that
New Mexico provides adequate
funding for the administration
of benefits, and that
administrators are using the
latest best practices in the
country to serve the eligible
families that seek their help. |

New Mexico Coalition to
End Homelessness |
Santa Fe, New Mexico/$5,000 |
|
The New Mexico Coalition to End
Homelessness (NMCEH) seeks to
end homelessness by promoting
the development of a system of
supportive housing and services
for homeless people in each New
Mexico community. The coalition
has helped increase the amount
of transitional supportive
housing and rent assistance for
the non-disabled homeless
people. The goals for this next
year are to continue our
progress toward creating enough
supportive housing to end
homelessness, and to offer
trainings that help agencies
provide the most effective
services. |

Outside In |
Santa Fe, New
Mexico/$8,000 |
|
Outside In has been responding
to the growing requests for
performances and presentations
to people confined to shelters,
residential treatment
facilities, nursing homes,
correctional facilities and any
other institutions where people
would not have access to the
arts. Outside In is delivering a
yearly average of more than 700
quality artistic presentations,
performances and workshops to
confined populations. A major
objective of the ‘Youth with
Promise’ program is to tap into
the creativity of these youth
through an immersion into the
arts, knowing that all studies
verify that this will also
enhance their academic ability.
Funding will expand the Youth
with Promise program to
Albuquerque. |

Planned Parenthood of
New Mexico |
Albuquerque, New Mexico/$15,000 |
|
New Mexico has the highest teen
pregnancy rate in the United
States and New Mexicans suffer
from some of the poorest
reproductive health outcomes in
the nation. New Mexico residents
have very few other resources
for low-cost, preventative
reproductive healthcare and
education and rely on PPNM to
provide affordable, equality
healthcare services and
education. Funding will support
PPNM’s educational, clinical and
advocacy program’s day-to-day
operational expenses and will
help the organization fulfill
its goals of providing more New
Mexicans with access to
low-cost, preventative
reproductive healthcare. |

REEL Fathers |
Santa Fe, New Mexico/$15,000 |
|
In
Santa Fe, northern and central
New Mexico, one in three
children live absent from their
father. Father absence has led
to a negative public perception
of fathers - contributing to a
downward spiral where fathers
withdraw further from their
children and families. The goal
of REEL Fathers is to use the
power of film and reflective
activities to honor, celebrate
and build community among
fathers, to lift the cultural
story around fathers, and to
impart key skills men need to be
positively engaged with their
children. Frost Foundation
funding will provide key support
needed to sustain REEL Fathers
while these partnerships are
established and funding is
secured. |

Santa Fe Animal Shelter
&
Humane Society |
Santa Fe, New Mexico/$5,000 |
|
Each year, the Shelter receives
nearly 6,000 animals. More than
90% of those animals come to the
shelter unaltered. To increase
community knowledge about the
importance of spaying/neutering
animals to prevent the problems
that occur with animal
overpopulation, the Shelter will
provide one day of free
surgeries at the limited Care
Veterinary Clinic and in the
Mobile Spay/Neuter Van. |

GUTS is a middle school program
that closes the achievement gap
by implementing systemic
approaches to STEM education.
Project GUTS engages
middle-school students through a
variety of activities that give
them an in-depth look at complex
systems through modeling and
simulation. Within each 10-week
unit students investigate a
local problem, interview
experts, gather data, build a
computer model, and run
experiments using the model as a
virtual test bed. Project GUTS
is a collaboration between the
SFI, MIT, New Mexico Tech, the
Supercomputing Challenge, the
Santa Fe Public School District,
and other schools and districts
in New Mexico. |
