New Mexico Fall 2022

Searchlight New Mexico
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $15,000

Across New Mexico, families struggle to access mental healthcare for children. The Waitlists are endless, there are few providers, and families sometimes travel for hours to get to a therapist. New Mexico has one of the highest rates of teen substance abuse in the nation - yet the state lacks a single detox facility for adolescents struggling with substance abuse. Searchlights’ investigative team will put a face on the crisis, talking to children, parents and experts, documenting the problem and giving policymakers and educators the facts needed to tackle the crisis.

Women in poverty often do not have access to job training because of language or learning barriers; public funding goes to homeless population through job training and life skills. Our goal is to continue to support people in poverty by providing inspiration and certificated job training with wrap-around services appropriate to vulnerable individuals. We provide apprenticeship programs in sewing and fashion design, culinary arts, and adult caregiving. We also offer G.E.D. preparation and financial literacy workshops. We collect monthly data to see the impact of our programs and have 98% success rates.

We are fostering peacemakers who are articulate, empowered, compassionate and self-aware women, and change agents. This project provides our participants the opportunity to engage with one another in a safe, facilitated manner, providing the much-needed opportunity for peer exchange while also developing confidence and leadership skills that translate into lifelong, transferrable skills that will help female teens succeed in higher learning and careers. The program’s concrete goals are to build global awareness, teach leadership, and inspire action for peace and justice.

Think New Mexico
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $30,000

New Mexico is not preparing our students to succeed in their lives after school, and we are not growing a workforce that can launch, attract, and sustain the businesses we need to build a strong and diverse economy. While there is no silver bullet that will fix the problems with New Mexico’s schools, there are evidence-based, high-impact reforms that have improved outcomes for students in other districts and other states. Think New Mexico has researched and published a report that lays out an agenda of policy reforms that have been proven to move the needle for students outcomes, either in New Mexico or elsewhere.
