Taos Amateur Radio Club
El Prado, New Mexico / $3,000
In 2021 Taos High School started a weekly STEM learning program by forming an after-school ham radio club. Through the dedication of TARC and THS staff, we were able to coach and train a 10th grade teacher to be qualified to give FCC tests. TARC solves education problems by leveraging ham radio equipment for an 80% education and learning lifecycle, with the remaining 20% effort for emergency backup. The community goal is to provide adult learning and testing, which will be measured by the number of FCC licenses earned via TARC test proctors in our county.
Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $15,000
Today’s jobs require literacy skills beyond the basic level, and there will remain an increased demand for literacy services, a demand that went largely unmet prior to the crisis that has only been magnified. With our Workplace Tutoring Program, volunteer tutors go to hotels, restaurants, and other workplaces throughout Santa Fe to teach small groups of employees English as a second language or basic literacy. Employers provide time off for the employees to receive tutoring and often pay for this time. Students partner with tutors to establish contracts, set goals, and develop a schedule.
The Santa Fe Raptor Center
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $12,000
The Santa Fe Raptor Center was established in 2004 to shelter and rehabilitate raptors, waterfowl, and songbirds - many of which are injured in encounters with humans or manmade threats. SFRC specializes in wild and migrating birds in the state of New Mexico and return them to the skies. Over the past 18 years we raised many orphaned birds, including songbirds and raptors, and have enjoyed successful releases. We are the only bird rehab center in the country working with the US Fish & Wildlife Service, who fit our golden eagles with PTT transmitters before they are released.
New Mexico Wildlife Center
Española, New Mexico / $15,000
The Caring Kids, Wings and Paws program seeks to allow elementary school students in the greater Santa Fe area access to principles of better animal stewardship of both wildlife and companion animals. Caring Kids was implemented in 2018 after the educators and Executive Directors from both organizations created the program together. The program seeks to address common community problems of animal overpopulation, mistreatment of both companion animals and wildlife, and lack of knowledge about animal care, wildlife habitats, common animal behaviors, and environmental impacts on animal populations.
Solace Crisis Treatment Center
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $20,000
Our mission is to prevent sexual violence and empower survivors of sexual violence and other violent crimes by restoring dignity, strength, and resilience. Clients who received treatment from Solace reported improvement in their lives but that they were not actually experiencing joy. After much soul-searching, Solace decided to pivot from a short-term crisis stabilization model to a more comprehensive program. Changing to a long-term model significantly improved outcomes for our clients, but clearly more work is needed.
Wise Fool New Mexico
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $15,000
Wise Fool’s youth programs create a safe space where anyone, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or body size, gains confidence and learns to build a supportive peer group. By applying social circus techniques, we strengthen youth’s social-emotional skills, practice teamwork, and support youth’s positive risk-taking. When learning to juggle, walk on stilts, or hang upside-down from a trapeze, they apply gradual changes, experience small wins, expand their self-confidence, and learn to trust their classmates and coaches.
Women’s International Study Center
Santa Fe, New Mexico / $20,000
By inviting artists and scholars into our collections, we’ve started to create interactive hands-on exhibits that connect the past with the present. We’ve shifted museum expectations by allowing artists hands-on access to archived collections to inspire and create new work. Our historic house will be an interactive exhibition space for artists in dialogue with the past. During a month-long stay in Santa Fe at one of the Acequia Madre House guest residences, WISC Fellows are given financial support and access to the 30,000 photographs, 3,500 objects, and a 5,000 sq. ft. house to create new, inspired art.
